About DRMC's Project

Calvin Bowman was chosen to be the Composer-In-Residence for The Dandenong Ranges Music Council's Composers_Connecting_Community project.

During the project, Bowman wrote a Suite - consisting of seven songs based on text from C.J. Dennis's A Book for Kids. C.J Dennis was an Australian poet who lived in the Dandenong Ranges and is best known for The Songs of the Sentimental Bloke.

A massed choir of over 400 school children from 13 schools premiered the work on 24 July 2006 as part of the 9th Hillsongs Festival.

The project gave students and community members the opportunity to work with a 'living composer', as well as giving them insight into the compositional process. Additionally, the project reintroduced the works of C.J. Dennis to a new generation of readers.

The following schools were involved in the DRMC's project:

  • Ferny Creek Primary School
  • Gembrook Primary School
  • Mt Dandenong Primary School
  • Kallista Primary School
  • Monbulk Primary School
  • Mt Evelyn Primary School
  • Mt Evelyn Special Development School
  • Upwey South Primary School
  • Menzies Creek Primary School
  • Boronia Heights Primary School
  • Fairhills Primary School
  • Heany Park Primary School
  • Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School

Artist Allan Stomann plans to provide illustrations for the songs, which will eventually be published as a music/poetry kit for schools and children's choirs.

During the C_C_C Project, Bowman also collaborated with the Ranges Young Strings, vocal group Singularity, and the Upwey High School Concert Band. As well as working with musicians, he mentored emerging composers working with the Dandenong Ranges Orchestra.
