Project Summary
Over 400 school children came together to perform a wonderful suite of songs composed by Calvin Bowman for the 9th Hillsongs Festival in July. The Suite consists of seven songs with text drawn from C.J. Dennis’ A Book for Kids, and was part of a project aimed at placing composers within the community so that the work they do and the process used might be further understood.
Other components of the project involved a collaboration between Calvin and the Ranges Youth Strings, and work with Singularity and Upwey High School Concert Band, as well as interaction with local emerging composers and the Dandenong Ranges Orchestra.
The DRMC acknowledges the contribution of the Australia Council, and is delighted to have been part of this pilot project. The students involved were most impressed to meet a ‘live composer’, and together with the generating of renewed interest in the work of C.J. Dennis, the outcomes of the project were successfully achieved.
