MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.
MODART05 is the current featured "Fresh Sounds" exhibition on ABC Classic FM's website. It will stay live for about two months. The exhibition contains downloadable MP3 versions of each work and excerpts from interviews that ABC's Australian Music Curator Stephen Adams conducted with 12 of the 13 composers who participated in the program. The performance of MODART05 was broadcast nationally on 16 January 2006 on ABC Classic FM.
MODART is a unique collaboration between The Song Company and the Australian Music Centre. Supported by APRA, the purpose is to give young composers from around Australia the opportunity to develop a short vocal work (two to six voices) in close collaboration with the singers of the ensemble and their director, Roland Peelman.
13 composers from around the country were selected to participate in developmental workshops with The Song Company during 2005. Their work was presented in Sydney & Melbourne in September 2005. The Melbourne concert was recorded for broadcast by ABC Classic FM.
MODART05 presented works by the extraordinary young composers: Joseph Twist (Brisbane); Samson Kar Fai Young (Hong Kong); David Howell, Nela Trifkovic, Judy Pile and Mark Viggiani (Melbourne); Rhiannon Cook, Brad Gill, Warren Summers and Brad Taylor-Newling (Sydney); Serena Vashti Armstrong and Brent Williams (Wollongong).
Established in 1984, The Song Company’s repertoire covers music from the 10th century to the present day and is unique in its diversity. Directed by Roland Peelman, the group combines the most ancient of singing traditions with the most daring contemporary vocals. Committed to excellence and fresh ways of presenting music, The Song Company enjoys a reputation as one of the most outstanding vocal ensembles in the world. The Song Company is well-known for their recordings, broad educational programs, innovative theatrical work, cabaret and extensive national and international touring.
The next MODART project will take place in 2007. Calls for submissions from emerging composers will take place at the end of 2006. For more information, please contact Meghan FitzGerald on p: (02) 9247 4677 or e:
