Program Notes: Psalm

This poem by Alicia Suskin Ostriker, a Jewish American poet, comes from her poetry volume The Volcano Sequence, 2002. I enjoyed the poem’s references to phrases and imagery from the Biblical psalms and was affected by its tone of honesty and intimacy, which is similar to many of the Biblical psalms. My musical setting attempts to emphasise the emotional journey of the poem.
