Program Notes: Gejja l- Banda
Gejja l- Banda, Here comes the band is an impression of a typical village festa in Malta. Although the structure and the harmonic language used in this composition contradicts the cliché of the Maltese march, it portrays to the listeners the cacophonic environment, which is a characteristic of this event. The festa phenomenon also reached the Maltese community overseas especially in Victoria, Australia, where the festa parties and all that are associated with them is not an exception. Gejja l- banda is a common expression of the villagers, waiting for re-call of their fellow festa mates to sing, ring the church bells, set the tremendous display of fireworks and prepare themselves for the unexpected especially from the rival festa party! Of all the village festas, the most important is always that of the saint of the parish church, however it is more than a superior religious feast! It is a combined demonstration of the village religious, social and economic status. These celebrations provide the chief public entertainment of the island during the festive season in Malta and hold well with the Maltese proverb that You can't get to heaven without saints.
