MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.
MODART is a unique collaboration between The Song Company and the Australian Music Centre. Supported by APRA, the purpose is to give young composers from around Australia the opportunity to develop a short vocal work (two to six voices) in close collaboration with the singers of the ensemble and their director, Roland Peelman.
The project enables talented emerging composers to work with an ensemble of international renown as well as producing new repertoire, the potential for ongoing relationships, and an enhanced understanding of the diversity and quality of emerging Australian compositional voices.
In 2007, seven young composers will be invited to work closely with The Song Company in creating new works for vocal ensemble.
In 2005, 12 young composers from around Australia were selected for the project which culminated in concerts in Sydney and Melbourne.
In 2003, 19 young composers participated in two weeks of workshops. The finished works were presented in concerts in February and October.
Established in 1984, The Song Company’s repertoire covers music from the 10th century to the present day and is unique in its diversity. Directed by Roland Peelman, the group combines the most ancient of singing traditions with the most daring contemporary vocals. Committed to excellence and fresh ways of presenting music, The Song Company enjoys a reputation as one of the most outstanding vocal ensembles in the world. The Song Company is well-known for their recordings, broad educational programs, innovative theatrical work, cabaret and extensive national and international touring.
