MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.
Following a national call for submissions in late 2002, 19 composers were selected for the inaugural MODART project. Works were developed in collaboration with the singers of The Song Company, under the direction of Roland Peelman and Composer–in–Residence Raffaele Marcellino. An intensive three-week period (2 weeks of workshops with one week rehearsals) culminated in the premiere of 13 new works presented in concert on 7 February 2003 at the Australian Centre for Photography, Paddington, Sydney.
The remaining works were premiered at a second concert on 19 November 2003 at the ABC Studios, and broadcast live on the ABC.
Established in 1984, The Song Company’s repertoire covers music from the 10th century to the present day and is unique in its diversity. Directed by Roland Peelman, the group combines the most ancient of singing traditions with the most daring contemporary vocals. Committed to excellence and fresh ways of presenting music, The Song Company enjoys a reputation as one of the most outstanding vocal ensembles in the world. The Song Company is well-known for their recordings, broad educational programs, innovative theatrical work, cabaret and extensive national and international touring.
The next MODART project will take place in 2007. Calls for submissions from emerging composers will take place at the end of 2006. For more information, please contact Regina Daniel at The Song Company, at e:
