MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.
Twelve composers from around the country were selected to participate in the 2005 version of the project. In February, extensive workshops took place under the guidance of The Song Company's Artistic Director Roland Peelman and the New Zealand composer Gareth Farr; a spirited and fertile exchange of ideas and methods.
Throughout the year, composers continued to work on their pieces in consultation with Artistic Director Roland Peelman. In the two weeks leading up to the final concerts in September the pieces were rehearsed and fine-tuned.
The results were exhibited in two impressive showcase concerts: one at the KPMG corporate building in Sydney on 17 September and one the following day at Chapel off Chapel in Melbourne. The Melbourne concert was recorded for broadcast by ABC Classic FM.
Established in 1984, The Song Company's repertoire covers music from the 10th century to the present day and is unique in its diversity. Directed by Roland Peelman, the group combines the most ancient of singing traditions with the most daring contemporary vocals. Committed to excellence and fresh ways of presenting music, The Song Company enjoys a reputation as one of the most outstanding vocal ensembles in the world. The Song Company is well-known for their recordings, broad educational programs, innovative theatrical work, cabaret and extensive national and international touring.
