Program Notes: Some Yum Cha-Cha
As a family in suburban Sydney, we often had “Yum Cha”, a quasi-a la carte situation wherein a multitude of dishes are brought on trolleys to the table by a gang of Asian women. In Some Yum Cha-Cha, I have combined fond memories of food and noisy restaurants with my interest in the westernisation of Chinese music. Drawing on 20th century Chinese pop music genres (such as the Cha-cha and ‘Shanghai Jazz’), this piece is a light-hearted tease on the Chinese character and obsession with money and food.
