MODART

Robert Dahm

MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.

Biography: Robert Dahm

Robert is about to complete his studies with Brenton Broadstock at the University of Melbourne. He first moved to Melbourne to pursue saxophone studies with Graeme Shilton and Barry Cockcroft. After composing music for choreographer Asher Leslie, Robert decided to devote his energies to composition, and has never looked back. He has written new works for Anne Norman, Peter Hagen, Barry Cockcroft, and the Atrium Quartet and is also a dedicated conductor of new music.

Program Notes: Belle Ame

Belle Ame (Beautiful soul) is set to the text of an eponymous poem by contemporary French poet Jean-Michel Maulpoix. Each stanza of the original poem was a separate entity, unrelated to the other stanzas in any narrative sense, but all contributing to the whole in its exploration of the nature of the soul. The music has been treated in a similar way: a series of short vignettes, each irrelevant of any other, but cumulative in their effect.
