MODART is a professional development project that provides opportunities for emerging composers to develop works for vocal ensemble, and which then receive public performance by The Song Company.
Biography: Vi King Lim
Vi King Lim was born in Taipeng, Malaysia in 1973 and arrived in Australia in 1982. He gained a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in composition at the University of Sydney in 1994 and is currently completing a Master of Music at the same institution. He lived in Indonesia from 1995 – 1997 where he studied traditional Javanese gamelan music and dance and is currently Director of Langen Suka Sydney Gamelan Association.
Program Notes: Factum et Silentium
Like Richard Dering's famous 1618 setting, the inspiration for this piece comes from a Latin liturgical text describing the celestial battle between the Archangel Michael and the dragon from the Book of Revelations. The opposing forces and dramatic contrasts evoked by this text strongly suggested to me many possibilities for musical elaboration. I have attempted to achieve this primarily through the juxtaposition of dissonant and triadic harmonic idioms and through a variety of vocal textures.
