The kit contains analyses of five Australian works for voices and orchestra by Hindson, Peterson, Adams, Orlovich and Vines. There are easy-to-use question and activity sections for individuals or groups, study scores, as well as DVD and CD to enable easy reference. The kit supports syllabus requirements for the study of recent Australian music.

About the Project
In early 2000, Fr. Arthur Bridge, on behalf of Ars Musica Australis, approached five young composers with the idea of a commission celebrating the centenary of Australia’s Federation. This was a unique project with each of the composers contributing one work representing an aspect of Australia’s development — Land, Migration, Youth, Future and Aboriginality. The texts of each of these pieces were selected from works by one of Australia’s most eminent poets, Peter Skrzynecki.
After the composition of each work, the process of rehearsal began. Over a one year period the choir and orchestra of MLC School, along with students from Trinity Grammar School, worked intensively on each of the new scores. Richard Gill, Australia’s most outstanding music educator, was brought in to conduct these works and to present a public seminar about their musical content, relationships to contemporary Australian music and to the broader Western musical tradition.
It is fair to say that this project would be one of the largest and most involved undertakings ever attempted by secondary institutions in this country, and as such, was a fitting tribute to the celebration of this country’s Federation.
The Kit
The analyses contained in this book are complementary to the analytical investigation by Richard Gill contained on the DVD. On the DVD we have the musical insights of an experienced educator and conductor, while the analyses in the booklet are from the composers’ perspectives. The works are analysed with a focus on musical elements, and with the idea of the compositional process in mind.
At the end of each chapter is a set of questions and composition activities which relate to Richard Gill’s seminars on the DVD as well as to the written analyses.
